So, let me introduce you to Stella Nyanzi!

This woman was imprisoned in a maximum security prison just because she called Uganda’s president: “a pair of buttocks”. Yeah, you heard right!

She called the Ugandan president “a pair of buttocks” because during the recent election campaign, he had promised Ugandan school girls free menstrual pads – since 3 out of 10 girls in Uganda don’t go to school when they’re on their period.

When the president had been re-elected, his wife Janet Museveni, Education Minister in Uganda, stated back in February there was no money in the budget for free menstrual pads.

Menstruation is one of the most common experiences for women. Despite menstruation being part of every woman’s life, millions of girls and women globally struggle to manage their monthly periods. While you are reading this, more than 80 million girls in developing countries are trapped in a poverty-cycle, due to the mere fact that their menstruation are prohibiting them from attending school. As a matter of fact, research shows that one in 10 African girls miss school during their periods, the U.N. children’s agency UNICEF estimates, which means they fall behind in their studies and often drop out of school.
